Did you know that Gini and her late husband, Howard, created Tony the Tiger, Jolly Green Giant, Speedy Alka Seltzer, Snap/Crackle/Pop, Hush Puppy, Oscar Mayer, Hamm's Beer Bear and other memorable animated characters that the Swifts made famous in TV commercials? A presentation of pre-computer animation from the 40's, 50's, and 60's includes the original sketches and videos of the finished filmed commercials.

If computers are the tool of the future, training in the basic technology is a must, even for the very young. Debi offers hand-on instruction, using computers, to elementary school children, age 5 through 12. Currently employed in marketing and advertising, she will focus on instruction for practical use and basic introduction to the Internet.

San Francisco prides itself on its historic walking tours. Now, both visitors and residents can learn more about Ojai. Betty, who knows the history of all Ojai buildings and homes over 50 years old, will conduct walks through downtown Ojai from 10 to 11 a.m. each Saturday from October through May. She will accept interns who would like to help conduct the tours, which are being co-sponsored by the Ojai Museum.



Patricia Weinberger
Community Activitist
For 55 years Pat has served her community, spearheading both environmental and charitable causes. For the past eight years she has been the spokesperson for Food Share, a voluntary group that ships 11 million pounds of food to Ventura County agencies that feed 127,000 hungry and elderly people. When Pat speaks to groups she talks from experience, for she has worked in the Food Share warehouse and gleaned food from farms after the commercial harvest. Tours of the warehouse may be arranged.

Through a series of drawing classes, lectures and seminars, Joe Amestoy will help prospective designers discover the field of design that most interests them. A former teacher at USC, Cal Poly Pomona and the Southern California Institute of Architecture, Joe will teach "Drawing as a Design Tool" and will offer classes at Amestoy House to be given by invited architects, artists and designers.

Cheryl wishes to encourage students and intern-level chefs to share the "secrets" of professionals and to learn the artistic use of herbs and seasonings in culinary delights that are both healthful and nutritious. Teachers are encouraged to submit names of eligible students.

Whether you are a high school senior or a college freshman, you will benefit from her experience in career guidance, as well as the writing of resumes and introductory letters.

Dedicated to doing more with less, Tony will conduct a series of guided workshops on Ecological Design, in which he will assist the citizens of Ojai in planning their environment: homes, streets and city in this time of local and global integration. An author and much sought-after speaker, Tony worked with Buckminster Fuller and is now fully immersed in the design of ecological community.

Have you ever eaten a melon, decided it was the best tasting melon you have ever eaten, and then found out it was organically grown? George is willing to talk to adults or students about how and why organic agriculture is good for the Ojai Valley, both environmentally and economically, and why he is committed to organics as the best way of preserving fertile farmland for future generations. Could the entire Ojai Valley be organic by 2010?

Don has seen it all, from plant engineer to the building, start-up and operation of Ventura County's largest paper mill. Today, he co-owns and manages The Oaks at Ojai and oversees 29 rental properties, a pension fund and an investment portfolio.

Jim tells us that animals don't have heart disease and many humans wouldn't either if they adopted healthier life styles. A series of small group discussions will examine life-style acquired diseases, including obesity, cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking-related illnesses. Options and resources will be discussed. Education and prevention can reduce the incidence of birth defects, as well as the severity of diseases. Early identification offers the most effective treatment and cure.

Has the need to break down barriers and build bridges ever been greater than it is today? Medicina Bilingue, an innovative bilingual health care management and educational program addresses linguistic and cultural barriers to health care. Dr. Feiss will provide educational programs to the medical community, outreach assistance to the patient community, and visit classrooms in an effort to make everyone more comfortable with doctors. Access barriers to adequate and appropriate health care affect us all, as individuals and as a community. This program is for everyone.

Martin Babayco, Ed.D.

As a parent or teenager have you found yourself sailing on uncharted and often dangerous waters without the aid of tools, instructions or basic maps? Dr. Babayco has spent 15 years as a speaker and workshop facilitator in this field. His emphasis is to empower parents to develop positive parenting skills, to instruct high school students in becoming effective parents, and to provide parents with information and help in serving the needs of exceptional children.



Meredy Maynard

Author of Dreamcatcher, a novel for 10 to 14 year olds, Meredy offers a 45-to-60-minute presentation on the writing process to elementary school children (grades 4 through 6). The program is designed to inspire young writers and encourage reading and writing. An experienced teacher and currently director of the high school at Oak Grove School, Meredy has a second book due out in the Spring of 1997.

Elementary school teachers can pick from a wide variety of musical styles, cultures, theory or history when they ask Lisa to perform in their classroom. From "Music and Movement" to Indonesian music, Gershwin, rewriting songs, conducting, listening and rhythm exercises, she will design a program to fit every need.

Have you wondered how the artist views art? Do you know what to look for in paintings, sculpture, ceramics and prints? Welcome to the G. Childress Gallery and Frame Shop in Meiners Oaks, where the artist/owner stands ready to discuss current exhibits with groups of adults and school children. Like the Old Masters who took on apprentices, Gayel also is prepared to accept applications from budding artists who wish to learn the trade.

Nancy Whitman

Matisse described himself as a decorative artist. This pleases Nancy, for she likes the pleasurable experience of paintings and tries to convey that feeling to the artists and students who visit her Upper Ojai studio and gallery. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, with additional training at the Chicago Art Institute and in Europe, Nancy offers tours to individuals or groups and instruction on drawing or painting to students and teachers.
